Overwatch 2 Will Have Multiple Character Arcs In Its Story Campaign

Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan officially announced Overwatch 2 at BlizzCon in early November. A major addition to the game will be a PvE story mode with Overwatch heroes. In a video interview with Game Informer, lead author Michele Chu talked about Blizzards' focus on multiple character arcs and what they wanted to achieve with Overwatch 2's stories.

In BlizzCon 2019, a mission set was playable in Lucio's hometown of Rio de Janeiro and events were set just after the first game. The Chu described the team's optimistic vision despite all the fighting and where things have gone right. Overwatch 2 will trace the events following Winston's telecast to members of Overwatch in the first game's opening theaters. Some heroes return and some do not, and the game will also reveal the new threats that the heroes will face and the world has changed and dissolved since Overwatch was created.

In addition to character story missions, Overwatch 2 will feature a new coming hero mission that will defend cities against Talon agents, experience levels, and customizations, many new heroes beyond Overwatch's original cast, new maps and a new game mode called Push. The Chu says players will experience the story, "through the eyes of all these characters," with each protagonist having a different view of what transpired and whether Overwatch had a role. The story mode will also focus on the relationship between the characters to find out how they face a crisis, and how they become a team. This will deepen the understanding of the game's cast.

No release date has been announced by Blizzard for the new game. Overwatch 2 will be available on Windows PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One.
