Redmi 8 is a new upgrade of the previous Redmi 7, although it is offering 4GB RAM and 64GB storage at a price of Rs 7,999. Here is our review of Redmi 8 from Xiaomi.
Xiaomi's Redmi series gets frequent updates every six-seven months, which also explains why the phones are consistently doing well in the competitive budget phone segment. Redmi 8 is a new upgrade of the previous Redmi 7, although it is offering 4GB RAM and 64GB storage at a price of Rs 7,999 when usually most phones offer 3GB and 32GB storage at this price. However, Xiaomi has also stated that this price is only for the first five million units sold for this phone.
But another new budget phone of the Redmi 8 brand is similar to Redmi 8A. Both run the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 processor for the same, which would be seen as an upgrade, given that the Redmi 7 had a slightly better Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 series processor, which is generally a higher range than the 400. Performance is the most relevant question for many users. Here is our review.
Redmi 8 specifications: 6.21-inch HD + (720p) display | Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 Processor | 4GB RAM + 64GB Storage (expandable to 512GB). 12MP + 2MP rear camera and 8MP front camera. 5000 mAh battery
Redmi 8 Price in India: Rs 7,999 for 4GB RAM and 64GB Storage
Redmi 8 Review
Redmi 8 has an Aura design. The Ruby Red version we found for review may look very attractive to some, but it looks stylish for a phone that costs just Rs 8,000. The plastic body, however, is easily smooth and prone to scratches, so I would suggest using a cover. The scratches on the red-colored version look really terrible.
The Redmi 8 also has a P2i splash-resistant coating for water resistance, which is an excellent addition to a budget phone. The phone has Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for protection on the front. The 5000 mAh battery compared to the previous versions of the Redmi series meant that it was a heavier phone, with a 4000 mAh battery.
Redmi 8 comes with a dedicated microSD card slot and a separate dual-SIM slot. Expandable storage support is 512GB. The device now has a Type-C USB port at the bottom for charging, which we also saw on the Redmi 8A phone. Overall, these are good upgrades to see on a budget phone.
Redmi 8 has a 6.21-inch display with HD + or 720p resolution. The display is acceptable for video, gaming viewing, although it is certainly not as sharp as a Full HD display. This difference is most noticeable when you are gaming on this phone because sometimes games like Asphalt 9 look quite different. But for regular use, I found the display adequate.
The phone runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 processor octa-core processor, which is similar to the Redmi 8A. In terms of performance, this is definitely on par with what you'd expect on a budget phone, although there are often noticeable gaps, especially when you're trying to run heavy-duty games like Asphalt 9.
For users who only want a phone to browse social media, take photos, Redmi 8 works, although it doesn't expect it to be blazing fast. The fingerprint sensor is precise and quick to unlock the device.
A dual camera is available on the backside of the phone. There is a 12MP camera with a 2MP depth camera for portrait shots. The focus of the camera is often sluggish, and it cannot handle exposure levels very well. Some shots are overexposed around the edges.
While the colors are fine and the shots have enough detail, if I'm comparing with the Redmi 8A, the camera won't show much difference, which is more affordable.
Redmi 8 has a large 5000 mAh battery with 18W fast charging. This is the best part about the device as you are assured that the battery will easily last for two days with heavy-duty usage. The in-box charger has 10W charging, which is standard and it will take more than two hours to bring it up to 100 percent with the charger. Nevertheless, the battery remains a strong suit of phones.
Redmi 8 Verdict
The Redmi 8 is a good offer for the price of Rs 7,999, given the large battery, and good performance with a stylish design. The weak point is the camera, which remains an issue on budget phones. The only problem is that given similar specifications, many users may prefer the Redmi 8A, which is cheaper, runs the same processor and offers much the same.
