Games of the decade favorite games from the last 10 years |
It has been a decade in gaming. We have seen consoles come and go, game subscription services proliferate, remasters rule, and technology go beyond our biggest dreams. Streamers have become household names, escorts have become a booming industry and we can finally play console-quality games on our phones that embarrass the likes of Snake. The last ten years have been a rollercoaster.
But when we look at 2010 as a decade, which games will really stand the test of time? We will be able to revisit which game in 20 years and hope that this next generation of next-generation consoles sits in our futuristic homes.
Here at TechRadar, after a few hot debates and light-hearted pranks, we put together a list of the best games of the decade. These are not necessarily the most cultural or technical influences in those games, nor are they ranked, they are the team's favourite sports for the last ten years. Let's be honest, it's hard to make a 'definitive' list of the best games of the past decade, not everyone will agree - as we all have different tastes and opinions - apart from that there are only a small amount of games Those we can include.
So sit back and enjoy Memory Lane with TechRadar's Games of the Decade list.
The Last of Us (2013)
Sony has knocked it out of the park this decade when it comes to boycotts, with giant releases such as God of War and Marvel's Spider-Man. But we believe Naughty Dog's The Last is truly the most memorable of all, marrying dependable characters with a beautiful cinematic action experience - all wrapped up in a post-apocalyptic bow.
Last of Us is everything you can have in an AAA game: characters with tight mechanics, visually stunning environments, emotional depth, and brilliant screenplay. But it is actually Joel and Ellie's relationship that steals the show, as we see the panicked, reluctant patron and his playful partner who develop a bond for the ages. We can't wait to see what the final is: Part 2 has to offer to continue their story.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017)
Zelda was due to a reinvestment after Skyward Sword on the Wii, and it was as radical a change as it has ever been in the series. The traditional overworld/dungeon structure was switched to a completely free-ranging open-world game, first mixed with living elements consisting of food and temperature.
But the Nintendo difference is how much Brest feels in Wilde's open world. You can climb every surface in its world, unlike games like Assassin's Creed, where platforming is extremely fixed. It feels like a true adventure, in a beautiful world, where you can complete the main objectives in the order you choose. It is the most important Nintendo game of the last decade.
Pokémon Go (2016)
It is not often that a game can run players the length of the solar system (collectively). In fact, it is not often a game that can increase players' ability to walk, but Pokémon Go changed all this when it was released in 2016.
Still highly popular, Niantic's mobile title describes how many generations the Pokemon brand crosses, with players of all ages going out to catch Pocket Monsters. Unlike many games, Pokémon Go encourages players to walk together, work together, and usually just be cute to each other. There are still days for the Pokémon Go community that sees thousands of participants. Pokémon Go is nutritious and - even better - it's free (for the most part). No other game got the formula right.
Mass Effect 2 (2010)
When deciding our best games of the decade, the TechRadar team knew that a mass effect game was going to make it onto the final list - what we were not expecting was something we all agreed on. This is clearly the mass effect2.
While Mass Effect was fantastic in itself, the sequel to the more interactive, narrative-rich and mechanically taunting story of Commander Shepherd is the pinnacle of the series. Not only can you move straight from the first game - retaining the look and personality of your commander - previous decisions affect how the story plays out, giving the feeling that the character is truly his own. Mass Effect 2 takes the best parts of its predecessor and makes them better than ever, adding more depth to both the story and the characters. This is the best series ever.
GTA V / GTA Online (2013)
As a series, Grand Theft Auto has always been a staple of gaming. When GTA V was released in 2013, it was a success, but what no one paid attention to was the game's longevity - and that was mainly down to GTA Online.
While GTA V is a great game in its own right, GTA Online is what makes it one of the best games of the decade for us with a constantly evolving world where you can essentially do as you wish. It is a feat of online multiplayer and one in which Red Dead Online has not yet been caught. GTA Online changed the boundaries of what a shared online multiplayer experience can be and we are still enjoying it today.
Journey (2012)
The journey to thatgamecompany is truly breathtaking. This indie gem may not be a cup of tea for everyone, but there is no denying that it is amazingly unique. Travel is a piece of art, combining an emotional nuisance with a moving sound that does not even need words. The concept is so simple but speaks.
The journey proves that a game does not require a huge budget to be awesome, indicating the emotional depth that so little (verbally) can tap into indie games. Travel is an unforgettable experience.
Stardew Valley (2016)
Farming simulators have been done a thousand times, but nothing like Eric ed Concernedep's Baron's Stardrive Valley. Pixelated RPG is a classic farming simulator, dungeon-crawler and adventure game, all included in an attractive package.
However, what we love most about Stardrive Valley is how comfortable it is and the depth in the game. Every resident of Pelican Town is beautifully handcrafted for their own personality, likes, dislikes and flaws. Stardew Valley doesn't feel like a getaway, per-mocha, but like an old friend you've seen in years.
Fortnite (2017)
Love it or hate it, Fortnite is a phenomenon. Not only did the game take the battle of the war to the masses, but it also blurred the lines between pop culture and gaming.
Fortnite streamers have become celebrities in themselves - just look at the ninja -, dancer dances have made their way into the real world, while it would be hard to go to any toy store without seeing a mass of Fortnite wares. For a game that is still technically in early release, one heck of a feat.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011)
Where do we even start with Skyrim? Bethesda's epic fantasy pushed the boundaries of open-world RPGs, allowing players to delve into a world of bizarre characters and colourful adventure.
Sure, hindrim has some issues with Skyrim bugs and glitches, but that's part of the attraction. In addition, the main find is superbly written and has a lot of notable quotes, visuals and side questions that will keep it fresh in our minds for another decade - at least until The Elder Scrolls 6 is released.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015)
This Witcher 3 is how an action RPG should be done. A tight story, unique character, picturesque atmosphere, rich folklore, more than you can shake a stick at and a charming - but charming - hero.
The Witcher 3 is an immersive fantasy, exploration, full of humour and a lot to watch. Many years later, we still can't get enough of Geralt of Rivia.
