- Beijing on Friday accused the United States of "repression" after President Donald Trump ordered a broad ban against Chinese social media giants Tiktok and WeChat.
- Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said in a regular press conference that the US move has come at the expense of American users and companies.
-
- Trump's executive order, which goes into effect in 45 days, prohibits anyone from doing business with the owners of TickTalk or WeChat in the US jurisdiction.
- They come as the two largest economies in the world, ranging from coronavirus to Hong Kong and Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, which clash over a range of issues.
- Trump's orders say social media giants are a threat to "national security, foreign policy and the economy" for America, as the president seeks to curb China's power in global technology.
- Wang said, "the US often abuses its national power and unfairly suppresses non-US companies".
- "At the expense of the rights and interests of American users and companies, America is ... arbitrary political manipulation and repression," he said.
