When Ponyboy goes home, Darry awaits him. ... Soda tries to stick for Ponyboy, but Darry yells at him. Darry is so angry that he starts beating Ponyboy and knocks him on the door. This is the first time someone in his family has killed him, so Ponyboy runs out of the house

Sodapop states that he likes to fight because " t's action. It's a competition, a drag race or a dance or something else". Steve is more violent in the sense that he likes to fight because he wants to beat "those suk heads"  because he enjoys it. The boys explain that Darry likes to fight as he goes to show his muscles. Ponyboy says that Darry likes to take part in anything involving strength. Ponyboy will fight, but he doesn't like it.

Darry hesitated to let Ponyboy fight because he has lost weight and strength since living in Windricksville. They also don't like that Ponyboy would be fighting without Johnny, as they usually protect each other.
