PS5 Price Will Likely Be Determined by Xbox Series X Price

Sony has not yet fully decided on the price of PlayStation 5. It seems that this is partly because it is waiting to find out how much it will cost to buy the Xbox Series X.

Sony had its own Q3 earnings this week, during which it was announced that the PS4 had the shortest Christmas sales period. A total of 6.1 million units were sold during Christmas 2018, while 8.1 million units sold in Christmas 2018.

Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki said he wants to ensure a "smooth transition" from PS4 to PS5 for Sony. But he was asked how we would do this and asked what costs Sony can control.

As translated by VGC, Totoki stated that Sony should control labour and personnel costs and that the PS5 will produce the right volume for production and sales before launch.

Then he added that one factor Sony cannot control is the "price level" of the next-gen console location. Totoki implies that Sony is waiting for what the price of the Xbox Series X will be before putting the price on the PS5, so as to become competitive.

"Which is not very clear or visible, because we are competing in space, so at this point of time it is very difficult to discuss anything about price, and based on the price level, we have to determine that promotion Which we are going to deploy and how much we are willing to pay. ”

Totoki then stated that balancing these predictable costs against Sony may not mean that nothing concrete can be said at this time. "But when I said smooth transition, we mean that we would definitely choose the optimal approach and we would try to create the best balance so that we would be profitable in life during the life of this product," said Totoki.

Sony will help its players make the transition to their next-gen console, as well, allowing PS4 games to be played with the backwards compatibility of the PS5. Microsoft is also providing Xbox Series X backward compatibility on the same day, capable of playing all Xbox One games on the first day. The fact that both next-gen consoles will have backwards compatibility is the first thing, and it's a big deal.
