India Comes Home Empty at the 2019 International Emmys. Here Are All the Winners |
All four Indian nominees - Sacred Games, Radhika Apte, Lust Stories, and Remix - failed to win in their categories at the 2019 International Emmy Awards, losing to the likes of McMafia (Best Drama), Marina Gera (Best Actress), Safe Harbor (Best TV Film / Miniseries), and The Real Full Monty: Ladies Night (Best Reality TV), respectively. The fifth India-set and Indian-directed nominee, India's Forbidden Love, Al Jazeera's look at Honor Killing in the country, lost to Bellingcat - Truth in a Post-Truth World (Best Documentary). This means that India came home empty at the 2019 International Emmys.
The 2019 International Emmy Awards were presented in a total of 11 categories on Monday night at the Hilton Midtown Manhattan Hotel in New York. The International Emmys is a completely different phenomenon from the main Emmys, which are US show award shows, long-established, and much more extensive. (The 2019 Emmys were given in September.) Also unlike the Emmys, the International Emmys Awards show in the calendar year. For the 2019 edition, it was TV programming released last year: 1 January - 31 December 2018.
Therefore, the Sacred Games nomination at the 2019 International Emmys was courtesy of its first season. Theoretically, it can still be nominated next year. Nevertheless, one of its actors got to celebrate - Nawazuddin Siddiqui - even though India had failed to do anything. That's because Siddiqui also starred in the British crime drama McMafia, which defeated Sacred Games for the top prize. And although unsuccessful with Netflix, it won two wins for Best Comedy and Best Telenovela elsewhere. Meanwhile, in terms of countries, Brazil, the Netherlands, and the UK were tied for the two winning ones.
