AMD Introduced Two New FreeSync Tiers for Gaming Monitors

Sometimes it almost seems that every monitor in existence features FreeSync, including your original home or office screen. This is why AMD decided to clarify its variable refresh rate branding with two new designations.

The first new tier is FreeSync Premium, which is the only certification awarded to demonstrate that 1080p or higher maintain a 120Hz refresh rate. FreeSync Premium Display requires the inclusion of low frame rate compensation (LFC) technology, which ensures that your frame rate remains smooth even at peaks above the screen's own refresh rate. When you see a monitor label with FreeSync Premium, you can believe that it was optimized and vetted for gaming.

The new highest-end version of FreeSync will be called Premium Pro and only applies to game monitors that can produce HDR photos with at least a Full HD resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. This new standard essentially replaces the FreeSync 2 HDR.

In addition to the computer monitor, AMD tells us that it will also validate TVs for these new titles. Given that more than half of the new 4K TVs announced feature CES 2020 support FreeSync, HDR, and higher-refresh rate panels, we expect to see a lot more and FreeSync Premium Pro screens coming to stores soon.

The regular FreeSync designation will still exist and will be applied to any monitor that features AMD's variable refresh rate technology. But at least these new designations will make Freescue Gaming gaming a little easier.
