Oscar Snubs 2020: All the Major Nominations Missing From the Academy This Year |
The 2020 Oscar nomination has been revealed. While we get excited to see great films like The Irishman and The Joker, much loved, this year's nomination is redefined as to what it entails.
This year's lineup features some of the major snubs, including top-tier performances from the likes of Adam Sandler, Lupita Nyongo and Jennifer Lopez, and talented directors such as Ryan Johnson and Greta Gravig. Watch the slideshow below or scroll down to see all the films, actors, directors and songs this year.
No female director
This is a very familiar problem at this point. For everything the Academy has done in terms of racial diversity since #OscarsSoWhite, still recognizing the work of women behind the camera is a real problem. There were plenty of viable candidates this year, from Lulu Wang of The Farewell to Lorraine Scafaria of Hustlers. Most of all, Greta Gerwig did not receive a nomination for Little Women, despite the film finding much love in other categories (including Best Picture). Maybe more nominees can be added to extend the time for the Best Director category.
Robert De Niro sneezed for Irishman
In general, The Irishman is receiving well-deserved attention in this year's nominations, including Joe Pacey and Al Pacino for both Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor. But why did star Robert De Niro quit running? This is De Niro's best performance and year, and possibly the last time we'll see him team up with Martin Scorsese for an epic crime saga. Certainly, the history between De Niro and Scorsese is enough to justify a nomination.
Jennifer Lopez and Lorena Scafaria for Hustlers
We have already mentioned how one of the many women in the Best Director category is Hustlers director Lorraine Scafaria, but Hustlers as a whole is easily one of the biggest snubs of the year. It was not nominated in a single category. At the very least, you think Jennifer Lopez will earn some recognition for the best performance of her career.
Adam Sandler for Uncut Gems and Eddie Murphy for Dolomite
Adam Sandler and Eddie Murphy are both incredibly popular comedians and actors who don't always make the best choices for film roles. The two reversed that trend in 2019, with Sandler's Uncut Ratna and Murphy's In Dolimite Is My Name ranking the best of their respective careers. Sadly, both were snubbed in this year's nominations.
knives out
Knife Out is easily one of the best films in 2019. You wouldn't know that from watching the Academy's award nomination. In addition to being nominated for Best Adopted Screenplay, Knife Out is originally MIA. Compare this to Golden Globes, where Knife Out earned nominations for Best Motion Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress.
Lupita Nyongo, Samara Weaving and Willem Defoe Horror
Historically, Academy voters have tended to watch genre films, and this trend is completely affected this year. Some of the best performances of 2019 were distributed in horror films, yet none are represented in this nomination list. Lupita Nyongo finds no love for the double role with us. Samara Weaving has been completely overlooked despite being the centrepiece of the excellent Ready or Knot. Willem Dafoe certainly deserved a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Lighthouse. All three were refused.
Farewell
We dropped out of this year's nominations completely, especially in view of the discussion of its initial awards. It was twice nominated at the Golden Globes, with Akwafavina taking home the award for Best Actress - Musical or Comedy. Certainly, Akwafina nominated as a Best Actress here, as well as a Best Actress nomination for Zhao Shuzen.
Queen and slim
Like The Farewell, Queen and Slim is a film that brought much buzz to the early awards season, but it did not generate enough momentum to get on the academy's radar. We loved seeing the identity for the first time director Melina Matsoukas, writers James Frey and Lina Waithe and stars Daniel Kaluya and Jodi Turner-Smith.
New songs of Aladdin and lion king
Neither Aladdin nor The Lion King did much to deviate from the original animated versions in 2019, but both films at least added a new show-stop tune to the already iconic lineup. Sadly, neither Lion King's "Soul" nor Aladdin's "Speechless" were recognized in this year's Best Original Song lineup.
Apollo 11 going missing
The Academy recently has a strange habit of ignoring documentaries that enter some real mainstream. It was Fred Rogers retrospective last year, aren't you my neighbour? This year it is Apollo 11, an exciting documentary about the changing lunar mission of the world.
Terron Egerton for Rocketman
We're completely honest to see Rocketman but dropped out of this year's Oscar nomination. This Elton John biopic received only one nomination for Best Original Song. It has a lot of technical categories that it should have recognized, and that should not say anything about Terron Egerton's incredible performance as Elton John. It's all the more bizarre how Bohemian Rapsody went home with fewer than four awards last year.
